Opening Statements of Committee Members

Opening Statement of Senator Mike Enzi (R-WY)

Hearing on Pending Nominations
9:30 a.m., Thursday, May 11, 2000

Thank you, Mr. Chairman for holding this nominations hearing. I particularly want to welcome Mr. Houseworth, the nominee to be Director of the FDIC Board.

This is the second time he has appeared before the Senate Banking Committee, as he was confirmed to be a Director of the Export-Import Bank in 1988. Mr. Houseworth's government service at both the federal and state level, and his extensive banking experience will certainly be tremendous assets to the Board.

His experience as Arizona's Superintendent of Banks will bring more state bank representation to the FDIC Board, as it is responsible for making policy decisions that impact both federal and state banks. It is important that the Committee and Senate act quickly on his nomination to restore the FDIC Board to its full complement of members.
