Washington, D.C. – More than a year into Donald Trump’s promise to lower costs for American families “on day one,” the minority staff of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee — led by Ranking Member Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) — released a new report detailing how the Trump Administration’s failed policies and broken promises have made the affordability crisis worse. The report finds that the President’s actions or “Trump Fees” — rolling back federal rules, abandoning enforcement actions, eliminating key tax credits, and slashing programs across the government — are costing Americans more than $86 billion each year. This is the second in a series of reports by the Committee detailing Donald Trump’s broken promise to lower costs.

“Donald Trump promised to lower costs for Americans ‘on day one.’ Instead Trump is taking an ax to programs and policies that save people money,”said Ranking Member Warren. “These Trump Fees are costing families across the country thousands of dollars every year.”

The report documents that for individual families, the economic hit can be compounding. A single household affected by multiple rollbacks could find themselves paying more than $5,400 a year in additional costs – even before factoring in gas, groceries, and utilities, which are all getting more expensive under President Trump.

The burden of higher prices is falling heaviest on those least able to afford them. In 2026 alone, 2.4 million people are cut off from SNAP benefits, health care premiums for more than 22 million Americans are skyrocketing by more than $1,000, and more than 8 million borrowers are facing $3,500 more in student loan interest.

In January, Ranking Member Warren launched a new probe into President Trump’s failure on affordability:

  • In January, Committee staff released a new report highlighting how American families paid $2,120 more in 2025 because of inflation under Trump – driven, in part, by the President’s chaotic and illegal tariffs.
  • In February, Senator Warren directly requested the President’s plans to lower costs for families after he failed to deliver any during his State of the Union Address.
  • In February, Senator Warren requested information from Amazon about the scale and timing of price increases on its platform, the extent to which they have been caused by President Trump’s actions, and what Amazon is doing to mitigate their impact.
  • In March, Senator Warren requested information from coffee companies on how President Trump’s chaotic tariffs have driven up coffee prices and hit families’ pocketbooks.
