Prepared Remarks of Senator Robert F. Bennett (R-UT)

Wednesday, April 22, 1998, 10:00 a.m.

I am pleased to be here this morning for this important hearing on the nomination of Ms. Donna Tanoue be Chairwoman on the board of directors of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Due to the enormous responsibility placed on the Chair of the FDIC, I contacted the Administration early in the process as they began looking for a replacement for Ms. Helfer to express my thoughts relating to the background and qualities any nominee should possess. I was given to understand by the Administration that, although they did not yet have a nominee in mind, any prospective candidate would have an extensive background managing large organizations, broad federal regulatory experience, and proven expertise in the field of financial services.

In this light, I welcome Ms. Tanoue to the Committee, and I look forward to reviewing her testimony.
