GRAMM SETS SECOND HEARING
ON EXPORT ADMINISTRATION ACT

Sen. Phil Gramm, chairman of the Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, has announced the second of two committee hearings in preparation for committee action on S.149, The Export Administration Act of 2001. The bill, introduced January 23, would provide the legal framework for the executive branch to implement export controls on non-military items for both national security and foreign policy reasons. The first hearing was held on February 7.

"This is a critically important bill," Gramm said. "It seeks to balance the national security needs of the country with our desire to be the world's largest producer and exporter of high-tech items. I hope this will be the first major piece of legislation to pass this Congress on a totally bipartisan basis."
