COMMITTEE VOTES TO APPROVE FOUR NOMINEES

HEARING SET FOR MAY 15 ON HUD NOMINEES


The Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs today approved four nominees for positions in the U.S. Commerce Department and for chairmanship of President Bush's Council of Economic Advisers. The nominations will now be sent to the full Senate for approval.

The committee approved Dr. Glenn Hubbard, professor of economics and finance at Columbia University, as chairman of the president's Council of Economic Advisers.

For Commerce Department positions, the committee approved Grant Aldonas of Virginia as Undersecretary for International Trade; Ken Juster of the District of Columbia as Undersecretary for Export Administration and Maria Cino of Virginia as Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Director General of the United States and Foreign Commercial Service.

The Banking Committee has scheduled a hearing at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, on four nominees for positions in the Department of Housing and Urban Development: Alphonso R. Jackson of Texas to be Deputy Secretary; Richard A. Hauser of Maryland to be General Counsel; John Charles Weicher of the District of Columbia to be Assistant HUD Secretary and Federal Housing Commissioner; and Romolo A. Bernardi of New York to be Assistant HUD Secretary for Community Planning and Development.

The committee has also scheduled a vote for Tuesday, May 15, on two more nominees whose confirmation hearing were held today, May 10: John E. Robson of California to be President of the Export-Import Bank and James J. Jochum of Virginia to be Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Administration.
