The Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs today unanimously approved the nomination of Harvey L. Pitt, of North Carolina, to be a member of the Securities and Exchange Commission. President Bush has indicated that he will appoint Mr. Pitt as Chairman of the Commission once his confirmation process is complete.
"Mr. Pitt's work at the SEC and representing clients brought before the SEC give him an extraordinary knowledge of Federal securities laws," said Sarbanes. "I am hopeful that when he is confirmed by the full Senate, he will use this knowledge and experience to better protect investors and enhance the quality and integrity of securities markets."
The nomination now goes before the full Senate. Sarbanes has indicated he would like the nomination to be considered by the Senate before the August recess.
