BAYH TO HOLD HEARING ON ROLE OF
ISLAMIC CHARITIES IN THE FINANCING
OF INTERNATIONAL TERRORISM

Senator Evan Bayh (D-IN), Chairman of the Subcommittee on International Trade and Finance, will hold a hearing on the role of Islamic charities in the financing of international terrorism.

Bayh and the witnesses will examine U.S. intelligence and law enforcement efforts to crack down on the use of charities to funnel money to terrorist groups; the implementation of the new anti-terrorism law with regard to the financing of terrorism; international cooperation in the effort to cut off terrorist financing; and the Administration's just-released 2002 money-laundering strategy.

The hearing will be held:

Scheduled to testify are:

  • The Honorable Kenneth W. Dam, Deputy Secretary of the Treasury;

  • Mr. Matthew Levitt, Senior Fellow, Washington Institute for Near East Policy, and former FBI special agent; and

  • Dr. Peter Gubser, President, American Near East Refugee Aid (ANERA). He will also testify on behalf of InterAction.
