The Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee today unanimously approved the nomination of Mr. Wayne A. Abernathy, of Virginia, to be Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Financial Institutions.
Wayne Abernathy has served with the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee since 1981. He is presently the Republican Staff Director and served as Committee Staff Director from 1999-2001. His other positions include Staff Director for the Subcommittee on Securities, and Economist to both the Committee and to the Subcommittee on International Finance and Monetary Policy. Abernathy received a bachelor's degree from Johns Hopkins University and a Master's degree from the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins.
"Wayne Abernathy is well-qualified to be Assistant Secretary of Treasury for Financial Institutions," said Senator Paul S. Sarbanes, the Chairman of the Committee. "Wayne is a consummate professional. He is straightforward, honest, and loyal to his principal, principles and party. He is smart, hardworking, and has always fulfilled his duties in a fashion that exemplifies the highest traditions of the Senate."
The nomination now goes before the full Senate for consideration.
