Shelby Statement on Banking Committee Vote on Mr. Adam J. Szubin’s Nomination

WASHINGTON, DC – Thursday, May 10, 2016 – U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), Chairman of the United States Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, today released a statement following the Committee’s Executive Session to consider the nomination of Mr. Adam J. Szubin, of the District of Columbia, to be Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Crimes, U. S. Department of the Treasury.  Mr. Szubin’s nomination secured approval by a vote of 14-8.

“Mr. Szubin’s role at the Treasury Department has required him to both promote and defend the Administration’s ill-conceived Iran nuclear agreement.  I could not support his nomination today because of his participation in facilitating a deal that I believe is crippling to our national security.

“I remain greatly concerned with the manner in which the Administration unilaterally crafted the Iran deal without input from Congress, as well as their reckless decision to provide up-front sanctions relief to the leading state sponsor of terrorism.  Providing Iran with billions of dollars will only further embolden the Iranian regime to sow instability and terror in the Middle East and around the world.”
