Brown Applauds Biden Administration Action on Rental Junk Fees

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Chair of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, released the following statement after the Biden Administration announced that it would work across agencies to encourage landlords to increase transparency and fairness in rents and limit junk fees.

“Too often, renters are hit with unexpected junk fees on top of their rent that eat into seniors’ and working families’ monthly budgets,” said Brown. “I applaud the Administration for taking on these fees so that we can bring down one of the biggest costs that Americans face.”

Brown has long fought to protect homeowners and renters from bad actors in the housing market and expand the supply of affordable housing. Last week, Senator Brown led a letter with Majority Leader Schumer and 17 Senate committee and subcommittee chairs urging the Administration to take a whole-of-government approach to address the affordable housing shortage. In December, Brown sent letters to VineBrook Homes Trust and Legacy Communities LLC after residents reported neglectful ownership practices. Brown has held a listening session to hear from renters who were harmed by investor landlords, and three hearings on the growing role of private equity and institutional investors and poor treatment of tenants in the rental market.
