Senator Warren and Representative Wilson Statement on Trump Executive Order Easing Syria Sanctions and Export Controls
Washington, D.C. – United States Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Ranking Member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, and Representative Joe Wilson (R-SC-02), Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement:
“The Syrian people deserve a fighting chance to rebuild after Assad’s repressive rule, and we welcome these steps in line with what we’ve called for to support the recovery. We encourage the Administration to continue removing outdated barriers to reconstruction while applying targeted measures against terrorists and human rights abusers. In addition, Congress should repeal the Caesar Act sanctions that were designed to pressure the Assad regime–but now risk undermining long-term stability in the region. It’s in our interest to get this right and avoid pushing Syria into the arms of countries that don’t share our values.”
Senator Warren and Representative Wilson have been urging the Trump Administration to make these changes:
- In March, Sen. Warren and Rep. Wilson led a bipartisan call for updates to outdated Syria sanctions to support reconstruction and promote stability in the region.
- In April, Sen. Warren and Rep. Wilson pressed the State Department for details and a timeline on updating Syria sanctions.
- In May, Sen. Warren and Rep. Wilson again urged the Trump Administration to follow through on Syria sanctions relief and ensure responsible updates to export control enforcement.
