Senator Warren Statement on Trump’s Continued Concession to China on Export Controls
Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Ranking Member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, released the following statement on reports that President Trump is extending the suspension of the Commerce Department Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) “Affiliates Rule” as a concession to China in trade talks:
“President Trump’s China policy is a failure and a threat to our economic and national security. After rolling out the red carpet and hosting billionaire Big Tech CEOs at a state dinner for President Xi, the Trump Administration says it will continue delaying a key rule designed to prevent China from getting access to advanced technology that can be used to build dangerous AI systems. Trump’s own Commerce Department has said the rule is critical to protect American interests, but President Trump is using it as a bargaining chip.
“This only proves that the Administration’s talking point for refusing to regulate AI at home because it will mean ceding to China is plainly false and a cover for doing the bidding of a handful of billionaire tech CEOs. Leader Thune should put bipartisan export control legislation on the Senate floor next week.”
