Warren Presses Trump on False Assertions that Grocery and Energy Costs are Down for Americans

“These assertions are flatly untrue, and raise questions about your awareness of the difficulty facing Americans as they struggle to heat and cool their homes, put food on the table, and provide for themselves and their families.”

“They are also deeply troubling: if you are unable to recognize that your chaotic tariffs and economic agenda are raising costs on American families, you will be unable to take action to fix them.”

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Ranking Member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, provided President Donald Trump information showing the cost of groceries, energy, and other essentials 11 months into his presidency are going up. This follows Trump saying he didn’t “want to hear about the affordability” and his false claims that “our energy costs are way down, our groceries are way down, [and] everything is way down.”

“These assertions are flatly untrue, and raise questions about your awareness of the difficulty facing Americans as they struggle to heat and cool their homes, put food on the table, and provide for themselves and their families,” wrote the Senator. “They are also deeply troubling: if you are unable to recognize that your chaotic tariffs and economic agenda are raising costs on American families, you will be unable to take action to fix them.”

Senator Warren provided data to refute Trump’s statements about costs: “[T]he most recent Consumer Price Index data published by your own Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that annual inflation in September reached its highest level since May 2024…. According to the same data, annual grocery inflation is rising at its fastest pace in two years.”

She continued: “Energy inflation jumped 1.5 percent in a single month between August and September. You also failed to acknowledge electricity prices, which are up 4.3 percent since January – a burden hitting American households with every monthly bill.”

The Senator concluded by asking President Trump to explain why he believes inflation, energy costs, and grocery costs are down despite evidence to the contrary and describe any plans he has to change his disastrous economic policies no later than November 24, 2025.
