Warren Statement on Commerce Department Finalizing Updates to U.S. Export Controls on Syria

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Ranking Member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, released the following statement:

I have advocated for – and welcomed – the Administration’s efforts to give the Syrian people a fighting chance to rebuild after Assad’s repressive rule. This rule is an important step that will help U.S. businesses, NGOs, and partners contribute to Syria’s reconstruction and strengthen America’s role in shaping the country and region’s recovery. I look forward to ensuring that critical updates to our Syria policy are implemented responsibly and effectively.”

Sen. Warren has led a bipartisan push to modernize U.S. policy toward Syria. She has consistently underscored that outdated export controls and sanctions undermine U.S. strategic interests, weaken regional stability, and prolong the suffering of the Syrian people.

  • In March, Sen. Warren and Rep. Wilson led a bipartisan call for updates to outdated Syria sanctions to support reconstruction and promote stability in the region while maintaining pressure on terrorist organizations and malign actors.
  • In April, Sen. Warren and Rep. Wilson pressed the State Department for details and a timeline on updating Syria sanctions.
  • In May, Sen. Warren and Rep. Wilson again urged the Trump Administration to follow through on Syria sanctions relief and ensure responsible updates to export control enforcement.
